Session: Builder Bootcamp, Summer 2026
Builders: 40 middle school students
Materials: redwood, plywood, cedar roof shingles, butt hinges, weather-proof paint, gate latch locks, wood screws, paint pens, custom opossum knobs
Tools: chop saw, speed square, drill, impact driver, measuring tape, sandpaper
Community Partner: Wildmind Science Learning
Description:
Over the course of a couple of weeks, student builders constructed four total (two each week!) opossum den boxes for Wildmind Science Learning in Half Moon Bay, which will house two rescued opossums, Ophelia and Clover. Students used the full woodshop to make these and included some very Girls Garage details, like a mailbox, shingled roof, and even an opossum sofa. Along the way, we also researched opossums extensively and made a collective zine comic about a day in the life of an opossum. Students even got the chance to meet Oakland Baller’s very own Scrappy the Rally Possum mascot on game day to celebrate!
