Materials, tools, and processes: Steel tube, bearings, sheet metal, steel rod, oxyacetylene brazing, MIG welding, steel punching and shaping
Session: Welding and Metalworking, Spring 2019
Builders: 8 girls, ages 9-13
Description: These 11-finned kinetic wind sculptures were a “breeze” to design and build! Eight girls in our Spring 2019 metalworking class worked over 6 weeks to cut, punch, shape, and thread sheet metal “fins,” and then brazed their rod connections. Then they MIG-welded the base of the rods to a central steel tube post, and used radial and thrust bearings to make the sculpture spin freely.
