Session: Protest + Print, winter 2024
Artists: 10 artists
Materials: MDO board, water-based acrylic paints, synthetic paint brushes (sizes 6-10),
Description: We split our “Signs of Solidarity” project this winter into 2 media: hand-painted signs and risograph prints. We began the project by asking our students to think about solidarity in their own lives, using inspiration from social protests like Black Lives Matter and the Free Palestine movement. For the first four weeks, guest instructors Seth Vargas and Meng Nguyen taught our students the basics of hand painted signs. Our students practiced brush strokes and lettering on tracing paper before painting onto the MDO board directly. In the last 4 weeks, they translated their signs into 3-color risograph prints, getting a crash course in risograph printing along the way.
