Session: Construction + Community, winter 2024
Builders: 12 high school students
Materials: redwood 2x4s and 2x6s, drills and impact drivers, deck screws, chop saws, landscape cloth, potting soil, clamps
Description: In our first Construction + Community class in our new workspace, our high school builders teamed up with our neighbors down the street, Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program (BORP), an organization that provides adaptive sports, fitness, and recreation opportunities to people with physical disabilities and visual impairments. BORP tasked our students with a site beautification project: replacing the busted wine-barrel planter boxes with 3 sturdier redwood planters, and building a new ADA-accessible picnic table that could fit 3 wheelchair users on one side. After weeks of building, our students installed the planters and table on the last day of class, repotting the plants and cacti.
