Session: Construction + Community, Spring 2023
Builders: 12 builders
Materials: redwood 2x4s, deck screws, impact drill and driver, miter saw, exterior paint, paintbrush, measuring tape, speed square, bar clamps
Description: In the spring session, our Construction + Community cohort built picnic table and benches for one of our longtime clients, Urban Tilth, to be installed at the dye garden on the Richmond Greenway. The one design constraint was that the picnic benches needed to be connected to the table itself, making it one large piece of furniture. The project included lots of angle cuts on the miter saw! After the picnic table was done, instructors Emily Pilloton-Lam and Augusta Sitney challenged our high school students to split into groups to build 4 additional benches with the leftover redwood scrap, allowing each group only 1 question for hints.
