Session: Carpentry + Woodworking, spring 2024
Builders: 12 students
Materials: miter saw, drill and impact driver, star screws,
Description: In spring session, our middle school students tackled a fun carpentry project: building a “transforming” beach chair, also known as a “nesting” chair! Instructor Augusta Sitney spent weeks prototyping the product, finally landing on an assembly plan. In a fun sustainable flourish, we decided to use the leftover reclaimed redwood from our geodesic dome for the Eames Institute.
This project had students using 3 different power saws: the miter saw, the jig saw, and the band saw, all to cut the side rails for the chair back and the chair seat. It also included cutting cross braces to reinforce the structure of the chair. The final step was adding slats to both the back and the seat.
