Session: Womxn in the Woodshop, spring 2024
Size: 8 adult students
Materials: cherry hardwood, miter saw, speed square, angle finder, tape measure,
Description: In our very first adult woodworking class, instructors Augusta Sitney and Evie Ortiz taught 7 women and non-binary adults how to use basic power tools, like the chop saw, impact drill and driver, to build a collapsible hardwood step-stool in just 4 weeks. The project was deceptively simple (as many are) but in reality required precision in cutting lumber to size and using a speed square to measure for right angles. Almost none of the adult students had ever used these tools, and while it was nerve-wracking to begin, they quickly found a comfort and rhythm in the wood shop. Over the weeks, the students and instructors got to know each other and bonded together, even going out for a celebratory dinner after the final class!
