Program Info

Womxn in the Woodshop invites adult womxn and gender-expansive individuals to learn the basic carpentry and woodworking techniques and tools in a supportive, creative, and fun environment. This 4-week, 12-hour course provides beginner or intermediate builders with an introduction to (or practice using) an array of hand and power tools: measuring tapes and layout tools, clamps, chop saw, bandsaw, jigsaw, circular saw/track saw, table saw, drill, driver, router, sanding tools, and more. Our projects require both teamwork and creativity, and result in an end product built by all. Just like with our youth classes, we prioritize safety, a safe and cheerleading class culture, and bringing together diverse cohorts of individuals who can bond while building!

Fall 2026 Session 2, participants will build planter boxes to either take home or donate to a community organization. This project will require some applied geometry, carpentry and framing skills (great for all those home renovation and garden projects!). There will be plenty of space to get to know each other, support each other as we build, and to practice and hone technical skills.

Womxn in the Woodshop is led by instructors Evie Ortiz (Girls Garage instructor and talented local woodworker/fabricator) and Lee Buchanan (woodworker, educator, and author), who have 30+ years of carpentry, woodworking, and building experience between them.

Registration Cost

This is a sliding scale workshop that we hope will provide access for individuals of diverse income levels. The revenue earned from this workshop is an important income stream for us, as it helps cover a portion of the building materials and respectful, livable wages for staff for our free teen programs. We ask that you consider honestly your capacity, and choose a registration fee level appropriately:

• $300: low-end, this equals $25 per instructional hour
• $450: middle-range, this equals $37.50 per instructional hour
• $600: full-cost, this equals $50 per instructional hour

Registration includes all instruction, materials, hardware, and safety equipment. And of course, an unforgettable experience and new friends 🙂
