Workshop Overview

In this one-day introductory workshop, we invite womxn and gender-expansive folks ages 18+ to dive into the world of power tools, carpentry, wood, and building! Over a five-hour intensive, participants will learn safe operation of a cornucopia of tools through the construction of a beautiful take-home project: a wooden toolbox, of course!

Tools:

  • Measuring and layout: Tape measure, speed square, clamps
  • Cutting: Chop saw, bandsaw, jigsaw, circular saw/track saw
  • Assembly: Drill and impact driver
  • Finishing: Sander, router
  • Wood and lumber: softwood vs. hardwood, dimensional lumber basics

Led by carpentry instructors Evie Ortiz and Lee Buchanan, who have 30+ years of woodworking and carpentry experience between them, participants will also enjoy a judgement-free, fun, and joyful environment that leaves plenty of room for questions, and laughter! Just like with our youth classes, we prioritize safety, a safe and cheerleading class culture, and bringing together diverse cohorts of individuals who can bond while building.

We’ll also have ample time to geek about about hardware (“What screws do I buy at Home Depot?”), lumber (“Why is a 2×4 not actually 2″ by 4”?) and for any other questions about DIY projects you’re dreaming up.  Some snacks and beverages will be provided, too.

Cost

The cost of this workshop ($300) includes instruction (including materials, hardware, safety equipment), and some yummy snacks and refreshments. And of course, an unforgettable experience and new friends 🙂

The revenue earned from this workshop is an important income stream for us, as it helps cover a portion of the building materials and respectful, livable wages for staff for our free teen programs. We recognize that this tuition may pose a limitation to some, but we also hope to use this program as a way to help support our ongoing commitment to free programming for all youth. Please email us at info@girlsgarage.org if you have questions about our workshop pricing or would like to request a need-based discount.
