Session: Young Women’s Design + Building Institute, Summer 2022

Builders: 35 builders

Materials: 1″ and 4″ insulation foam, salvaged duct work, plywood, primer, exterior paint, paintbrushes, drop cloth, newspaper, glue, black paint pens

Description: To “accessorize” our toolbox parade float, the students and staff of the Young Women’s Design + Building Institute designed and constructed 6 larger-than-life tools: pliers, hand saw, hammer, wrench, screwdriver, and ruler. The tools were made out of a mish-mash of foam, reclaimed ductwork, and plywood; our students applied paper mache to cover the surface of each tool, then primed and painted. To make the contours of the tools “pop,” they outlined the angles and edges in black paint pen.
