Session: Young Women’s Design + Building Institute, Summer 2025
Artists: 38 high school students
Materials: Pencil, erasers, colored pencils, markers, enamel paint, paint brushes, DIY stained glass mixture (liquid glue, black acrylic paint, cornstarch), 11×17 paper, 10 5/8”x13 3/4” clear acrylic
Description:
Inspired by flora and fauna of the Bay Area, students were challenged to design their own faux stained glass piece to display at Adventure Playground. Equipped with their DIY stained glass mixture (meant to mimic the appearance of solder) and a piece of clear acrylic, these artists expertly crafted unique representations of sea lions, blue whales, monarch butterflies, California poppies, yellow-billed magpies, sea turtles, and more! Through layers of paint, many folks played with the element of light by ensuring that some portions of their stained glass art were more opaque than others. We ended our session with 38 different pieces that will be emblazoned across the fences of Adventure Playground!
