Session: Construction + Community, Spring 2025

Builders: 12 high school students

Materials: redwood, wire mesh, staple gun, plastic bins for catching soil

Tools: chop saw, track saw, drill press, hand router, hand drill, impact driver

Description:

Our latest Construction + Community cohort took on a big challenge: crafting three multi-purpose redwood tables for Sogorea Te’ Land Trust, designed to handle everything from washing vegetables to sorting seeds. Each table features removable surfaces, seed-sorting mesh stations, and custom-fit bins for washing vegetables, which are not only functional but also durable and built to last. The shop quickly filled with the sound of drills, chop saws, and that satisfying moment when a tricky piece finally slides into place. By the final class, the group was sliding in the last bins and wiping down tabletops, leaving behind not just beautiful outdoor furniture, but tools for daily stewardship that will be used across the East Bay for years to come.
