One of the highlights of our summer 2013 session was a visit to the incredible shop of Carl Bass, CEO of Autodesk. Carl has been a long-time friend and supporter, and he generously invited our girls to come and see the kind of projects he works on in his own personal shop. Among other impressive woodshop equipment, he gave us a demo of his 6-axis CNC router, a computer-controlled machine that uses a router or drill bit to precisely cut out wood along 6 controllable axis. He and his shop partner, Betz, also showed us how this high-tech machine works in happy concert with many of his lower-tech tools. Our girls left with wide eyes and a better understanding of full-scale craft and fabrication in a working woodshop.
